On Super Bowl Sunday, Joe Biden missed out on the coveted endorsement from Taylor Swift, contrary to some expectations. However, Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce, is making strategic use of the president’s renewable energy tax credits to fund the production of the film titled “My Dead Friend Zoe.”

Travis Kelce, the tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, is venturing into the world of movies with an indie film bound for SXSW. The movie, titled “My Dead Friend Zoe,” features a star-studded cast including Natalie MoralesEd Harris, and Morgan Freeman. Interestingly, Kelce is not just making a cameo; he’s also donning the hat of an executive producer for this project.

What’s intriguing is that the film’s financing strategy is quite unique. Kelce and other investors are leveraging the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act to fund this low-budget dark comedy. With a production cost of less than $10 million, it’s a creative and cost-effective way to bring their cinematic vision to life.

In August 2022, the Inflation Reduction Act was passed, marking “the single largest investment in climate and energy in American history, enabling America to tackle the climate crisis, advancing environmental justice, securing America’s position as a world leader in domestic clean energy manufacturing and putting the United States on a pathway to achieving the Biden-Harris Administration’s climate goals, including a net-zero economy by 2050,” according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s web site. “My Dead Friend Zoe” used money generated by green energy entrepreneur Mike Field’s sale of surplus tax credits. (Field is also a producer on the film.)

Ray Maiello, the producer of “My Dead Friend Zoe,” acknowledges that Hollywood can be a risky business, especially when it comes to independent films. On a scale of one to ten, the risk factor in Hollywood is a whopping 9.5. However, the introduction of federal tax credits has significantly mitigated this risk, bringing it down to a more manageable level—around a five.

Travis KelceRay Maiello, and Mike Field are employing this same strategic approach to finance another film: the Jean-Michel Basquiat documentary titled “King Pleasure.” This project, produced by Boardwalk Pictures, is under the capable direction of Quinn Wilson, formerly the creative director for Lizzo. Interestingly, the film is being developed in collaboration with the late artist’s estate. Kelce, Maiello, and Field might just set a trend in Hollywood by leveraging the Inflation Reduction Act to bolster the struggling indie film sector.

Maiello explains that the idea to diversify beyond their existing ventures had been brewing for years. The recent incentives provided by President Joe Biden further fueled their expansion plans. Recognizing that people often struggle to predict their tax liabilities and are wary of risks, Biden’s federal tax credits have opened up new possibilities. By combining these credits with Hollywood endeavors, they’re creating a fresh synergy.

As for “My Dead Friend Zoe,” directed by Kyle Hausmann-Stokes, the film explores the dynamic between a female Afghanistan veteran (Natalie Morales) and her Vietnam vet grandfather (Ed Harris) at their family’s ancestral lake house. The movie is set to premiere at SXSW on March 9 and is being represented by CAA.

Travis Kelce, the star tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, has confirmed that he’ll be back for the 2024-25 NFL season, aiming to contribute to the Chiefs’ quest for a potential three-peat as Super Bowl champions. But that’s not all—Kelce is also venturing into the glitzy world of Hollywood, following in the footsteps of Tom Brady. Brady recently made a memorable appearance as himself in the popular comedy film “80 for Brady” and has been actively involved in film production.

Kelce’s Hollywood journey is just beginning, and he’s already making waves. Represented by CAA, he’s poised to explore new horizons beyond the football field. It’s an exciting time for Kelce fans, as they get to see their favorite athlete take on a whole new arena! Lights, camera, Kelce!
