I really think Sydney Sweeney is a talented actress. I believe her Emmy nomination for Euphoria and The White Lotus was well-deserved. She is truly great in reality. Some people might also remember her destructive turn in the early seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale.
However, being a great dramatic actress doesn’t mean being limited to comedy (or action). Keanu Reeves is one of the great action stars of our generation. He wasn’t great in The Lake House or Sweet November. Explore his soul. You know it to be true! Remember the world of ghosts? A little Birch in it, and it was remarkably better in American Beauty. Although, his range seemed confined to melancholic teens.
During this time, the trailer for Annie Bat You seems to depict the limits of Sweeney’s range. She doesn’t seem to have the necessary mouse-on-tape for this type of romantic comedy, and Glenn Powell’s contrary acting, which he clearly does, doesn’t help matters. It feels like he’s reading cue cards poorly, and if the trailer can’t be edited to be better than this, I have very little hope for his performance in the film.
“ANYONE BUT YOU” will be released in theaters on December 22nd.
