Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been at the center of controversy for his program that shuttles migrants from the southern U.S. border to cities across the country, including New York City. While critics, including New York Mayor Eric Adams, accuse Abbott of playing politics with people’s lives, the governor points the finger squarely at President Joe Biden.

Abbott asserts that it is Biden who is using asylum-seekers as “political pawns”. During an interview on Fox News Sunday, Abbott defended his program, which began in 2022, by placing the blame on Biden’s border policies. The influx of migrants in New York has become unsustainable for city services, leading to tensions between Abbott and local officials.

‘Our country is being invaded in ways that put our country at risk because the political games that Joe Biden has played,’ Abbott told host Martha MacCallum on Fox News Sunday.

‘And Mayor Adams is just aiding and abetting that by having a sanctuary city status…welcoming anybody from across the world to live there and stay there, on the bill of New York.’

‘What Mayor Adams needs to do is stop talking boldly about immigration and the migrants Texas is sending there and step up and do his own job.’

Abbott is busing immigrants from the Texas border into liberal-run cities like New York and Chicago. The latest figures released by Texas officials in March show the state has relocated more than 105,000 immigrants through 2022, including 39,000 who were transported to New York.

‘I’m going to offer him a stay in one of the [Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Centers], so he can see what he has created and understand how we are treating people with the dignity and respect that he should have shown,’ Mayor Eric Adams said Thursday.

Adams even extended an invitation to Abbott for a complimentary stay at a migrant shelter during the New York Republican Party’s annual gala. However, Abbott dismissed this gesture as a mere “gimmick” and urged Adams to focus on his own city1. The governor emphasized that New York’s sanctuary city status, which welcomes migrants from around the world, exacerbates the crisis and places an undue burden on taxpayers.

Here’s the crux of the situation: New York City has absorbed over 175,000 migrants and allocated a staggering $1.45 billion in fiscal year 2023 to provide shelter, food, and services for them. Unfortunately, the crisis shows no signs of abating, and the city anticipates spending a whopping $12 billion on migrants by fiscal year 20251.

Interestingly, arriving migrants in New York City receive prepaid debit cards that seemingly offer double the amount for essentials compared to other welfare benefits. While an average family of four on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) receives $713, New York’s pilot card scheme for migrants provides $1,400 every four weeks.
