Ryne Sandberg, the former second baseman and manager for the Philadelphia Phillies, revealed on Monday via an Instagram post that he is currently fighting prostate cancer.

The 64-year-old has a unique place in the history of the Phillies. He was chosen by the Phillies in the 20th round of the 1978 MLB Draft and played 13 games for the 1981 Phillies before being traded to the Chicago Cubs for shortstop Iván DeJesús the following offseason. This trade is considered one of the most uneven in MLB history, as Sandberg went on to make 10 All-Star Game appearances, win nine Gold Glove Awards, earn seven Silver Sluggers, and win the 1984 NL MVP during his 15 seasons with the Cubs. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005.

Sandberg returned to the Phillies in 2011, managing the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs for two seasons. In 2013, he joined Charlie Manuel’s staff as the bench coach, with the expectation that he could eventually take over from the franchise’s most successful manager. This came to pass when the Phillies dismissed Manuel in August of 2013. Despite the Phillies’ satisfactory performance under Sandberg, he struggled to connect with modern players during his three seasons in charge and resigned unexpectedly in June of 2015, with Pete Mackanin taking his place.

Any tension that may have existed between Sandberg and the organization at the time of his resignation seems to have dissipated over time. He has been spotted at both Spectrum Field and Citizens Bank Park in recent years and continues to be involved in the sport as an ambassador for the Cubs.

Everyone at Phillies Nation extends their best wishes to Sandberg in his fight against cancer.
