Etterlene DeBarge, the renowned gospel singer and beloved matriarch of the iconic DeBarge family, has died as reported by TMZ.

Etterlene, a mother of ten, peacefully left this world in her sleep at Berkley Post-Acute in Woodland Hills on a Friday morning. Her daughter, Etterlene “Bunny” DeBarge, shared the news. While the specific cause of her passing remains undisclosed, sources indicate that Etterlene had been unwell and was courageously battling dementia.

Bunny, the daughter of Etterlene DeBarge, shared the heartbreaking news of her mother’s passing through social media. In a concise message, she informed fans of the group that Etterlene had transitioned to a better place.

Etterlene’s journey began when she met Robert DeBarge in 1952, and they married the following year. Their union resulted in a large family, with ten children. Seven of these talented offspring would go on to form the renowned Motown supergroup, DeBarge.

The Grammy-nominated group enjoyed an active period from 1979 to 1989. However, the allure of solo contracts for Bunny and El DeBarge eventually led to the group’s dissolution. Other factors also contributed to the family band’s eventual separation.

Etterlene’s life was marked by both joy and pain. Her marriage to Robert ended in divorce in 1974, and she chronicled their journey and her children’s rise to fame in her book, “Other Side of the Pain.” Later, she found lasting companionship with George Rodriguez, whom she married in 1980.

Etterlene leaves behind George, eight of her children, and numerous grandchildren. Sadly, her son Robert DeBarge Jr. passed away in 1995, while Tommy DeBarge left us in 2021. Despite her physical absence, Etterlene’s musical legacy and impact endure through her talented children.

At the age of 88, Etterlene DeBarge bids farewell.

May she rest in peace.
