“I, Tonya” director Craig Gillespie is in talks to direct the upcoming “Supergirl” film at Warner Bros.’ DC Studios.

“Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” the movie, is based on the Tom King and Bilquis Evely DC comics series of the same name. It will film later this year, following the conclusion of James Gunn’s “Superman” production. Milly Alcock, the breakout star of “House of the Dragon,” will play the titular role.

After a protracted casting process in which Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran flown several performers, including Meg Donnelly, to Atlanta for on-screen trials on the “Superman: Legacy” set, Alcock was cast for the part.

“Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to Peter for this role, well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics,” After being cast, Gunn posted on social media, saying, “I was watching ‘House of the Dragon’ and thought she might have the edge, grace and authenticity we needed.”

Gunn has hinted before that this new version of the superhero will be “much more hardcore” than previous versions. When he unveiled the first ten titles of the new DCU slate in 2023, he said, “She’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

In the latest version, Supergirl and Krypto the Superdog travel on a galactic journey to celebrate Supergirl’s 21st birthday. She encounters Ruthye, a young woman, along the road and ultimately embarks on a deadly revenge mission.

Gunn and Safran, the heads of DC, will produce. “The Vampire Diaries” author Ana Nogueira is writing the script.

“Cruella,” “The Finest Hours,” “Lars and the Real Girl,” and, most recently, “Dumb Money” are among the films that Gillespie has directed. He is represented by CAA, Rumble Media and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.

The news was first reported by deadline.
